The September, 2011, issue of AGD Impact features an excellent article on retiring, "Is it Time?"  ARD provided input to the article which provides important points to consider as one looks at the later years of pracitce and life.  Here's a link that allows AGD members to read the article online. Otherwise, find an AGD member and borrow the issue. -Neil

Mentoring

We'd like to introduce a new opportunity for the members of ARD to get involved as mentors.

What is mentoring?

We define it as an older dentist who has had years of practice and practical experience in one or more areas of dentistry and who is willing to share those experiences with younger dentists.  The purpose is to expand the knowledge base of the younger dentist and give a perspective unavailable in any other format.
In addition,  the mentor will find a source of ongoing satisfaction in helping others.

“Now that makes sense!” This was my reaction after reading William Bridges’ book, “Transitions,” 20 years ago. Having revisited his concepts, this remains my reaction today. The impact of change has been a continuing theme of this column, and Bridges has added immeasurably to my understanding of how I can best handle those times when the ground shifts dramatically beneath my feet.

Interesting facts

Here are two interesting facts:1) Most people underestimate how long they will live by at least five years, according to a 1985 poll by the Association of Private Pension and Welfare Plans and the ERISA  Industry Committee. 2) Only one in four people have a written document in preparation for dying. (Page 100 Longevity Revolution) These facts suggest the importance of giving serious thought to aging.  Retirement financial planning needs to incorporate living longer than commonly thought.  In addition it is prudent to face up to the fact that we all will die, and it is while we are healthy that we can make the best decisions about death.
